Kangaroo Room
4 to 5 years
Our Kangaroos room is designed to provide a structured and developmentally appropriate learning experience to prepare children for formal schooling. We strongly encourage parent and family involvement and offer extensive support, especially towards the later part of the year, when your child’s progress is celebrated for all their achievements. This year of education and care is marked with many occasions as children grow more independent each day.

Development stages:
Early Literacy: Pre-schoolers will be introduced to pre-reading and pre-writing skills. This includes recognising letters and their sounds, understanding basic concepts like letter-sound correspondence and developing fine motor skills through activities such as colouring, tracing and beginning to writ their names..
Numeracy: Basic maths concepts are introduced, such as counting, number recognition and simple addition and subtraction. Activities may involve using manipulatives like counting bears or blocks.
Social and Emotional Development: Children are taught important social skills, such as sharing, taking turns and resolving conflicts. They learn to express their feelings and work on empathy and understanding the emotions of other.
Science and Nature: Simple science experiments and exploration will be incorporated into the curriculum. Children may learn about topics like plants, animals, seasons and basic scientific concepts through hands-on activities.
Art and Creativity: Pre-schoolers are encouraged to express themselves through art and creative activities. They will work with various art materials and engage in music and movement activities.
Physical Development: Gross and fine motor skills are developed through activities like running, jumping, climbing, obstacle setups, and using scissors or pencils/textas/crayons. Physical education is important for the Dugongs which will include regular sport days.
Cognitive Development: Critical thinking skills are fostered through puzzles, problem-solving games and activities that require reasoning and decision-making.
Language Development: The curriculum includes activities to improve vocabulary, communication skills and listening skills. Children have opportunities to engage in story time, show-and-tell and language-building activities and games.
Cultural and Social Studies: Children will be introduced to diverse cultures and the world around them. Acknowledgement and celebration of cultural traditions, especially for our first Nations peoples will be embedded into our curriculum.
Play and Socialisation: Play is an important part of the preschool curriculum. It helps children develop their imagination, creativity and social skills. Group play and interaction with peers is emphasised.

Preparation for School: While our primary goal is to make learning enjoyable, there is often an intentional effort to prepare children for formal schooling. This will include practicing routines, following instructions and building a sense of responsibility.
Assessment and Reporting: Our Early Childhood Teacher will provide regular assessments and progress reports to parents, giving them an idea of their child’s development in various areas.
Parents can expect that their children will learn through a combination of structured activities and play. We hope that our educational values and priorities align to parents and always encourage feedback. We see parents as their child’s first educators and partner with you to promote every success for your child’s future.
